Account lockout threshold: Specifies how many chances users get to enter their password correctly before the account is locked. Account lockout duration: Specifies how long an account will be locked for after users have incorrectly entered their password the number of times specified in the account lockout threshold. Password age: Specifies the maximum and minimum allowed age for a password (respectively how long a password will be valid for before the user is forced to change it, and the earliest time that a user will be allowed to change the password). These policies will be applied only on SQL Server installations running on Windows Server 2003: this feature is unavailable on Windows 2000 or XP (even if the machine is on a Windows 2003 domain). To test this, we ll demonstrate how to enforce a minimum length for SQL Server passwords. First, we need to set the policy on the local machine, so open the Local Security Settings MMC snapin (Start Programs Administrative Tools Local Security Policy) or Default Domain Controller Security Settings (Start Programs Administrative Tools Domain Controller Security Policy), depending on whether or not the SQL Server machine is a domain controller. Open up the Account Policies node, and then the Password Policy node, and double-click the Minimum Password Length policy, as you see in Figure 11-1.

This task is useful for sending messages within, for example, the development environment, but it doesn t offer the flexibility of control and presentation that a more dedicated e-mail solution might. I guess it isn t meant to be anything more than basic. Messages can be built up using a variable and perhaps a Script Task upstream in the Control Flow that would go some way toward producing content more suitable for reporting purposes. Alternatively, I would advise the creation and use of either a custom Control Flow component that incorporates your requirements, or a class library containing methods to support them. The message text can be a string that you provide, a connection to a file that contains the text, or the name of a variable that contains the text. The task uses the SMTP connection manager to connect to a SMTP server.

To test this, create a user with an invalid password: CREATE LOGIN Bob WITH PASSWORD = 'bob' SQL Server will reject this command and won t create the login, because the password doesn t meet the criteria stipulated in the local Windows policy. You should now see an error message like this: .Net SqlClient Data Provider: Msg 15116, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Password validation failed. The password does not meet policy requirements because it is too short.

The Transfer Database Task is used to copy or move a database from one SQL Server to another. Transfers can take place between version 8 (SQL Server 2000) and version 9 (SQL Server 2005) database servers. This task can transfer only a single database as part of the operation. It is not possible to transfer SQL Server 2005 format databases to SQL Server 2000, however. SQL 2005 has many more features and the two formats just aren t compatible. Figure 6-44 shows the task-configuration dialog, updated to make a copy of the ApressBook database called ApressBookUAT.

To enable tracking of server configuration changes over time, SQL Server 2005 allows you to turn on a default server trace. Some of the reports in SSMS that you saw in the previous section use this default trace to display these changes in a graphical way. You can open the trace file using Profiler or by running the following T-SQL command: SELECT * FROM fn_trace_gettable ('C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG\log.trc', default) GO As its name implies, default trace is on by default.
