Based on what I ve seen, the robot, from a physical standpoint, is amazing. Early estimates are a 10-hour battery life on six D-cell batteries. It has 12 motors, and many of them can run simultaneously, giving the robot incredibly fluid movement ability. From a standing position, it can actually lay itself down, sit up, and even stand up from both a face-up or face-down position. The hands have also received a major upgrade. They look to be much more capable than the original Robosapien s claws, and are much stronger, too. The demo robot at the New York Toy Fair was capable of picking up and carrying a 12-ounce can of soda. But for all the personality and physical improvements, where V2 is really groundbreaking is in its new vision system. Mark Tilden has said, What Robosapien V1 did for walking, V2 will do for vision. Using infrared distance sensors, the robot is capable of seeing its surroundings; it can detect obstacles, track movements, and reach out and take objects that you hand it. That s pretty amazing, but the vision system doesn t stop there. Additionally, V2 is equipped with a secondary vision sensory system that is able to detect and discern colors. This helps the robot recognize objects, and as WowWee claims, even skin tones. The robot is also equipped with a stereo sound system, and of course the sonic sensor capabilities of the original Robosapien.

WowWee promises that V2 will also have a lot more options in terms of autonomous operation than the original Robosapien. Just the ability to avoid obstacles with a vision system, as opposed to the touch sensors the current Robosapien uses, is a major upgrade in terms of autonomy. Figure 16-5. The rings on V2 s hands not only protect the delicate fingers, but do double duty as touch sensors and handles to aid in programming the robot.
