Similar to a SQL view, a named query creates a new logical table that is added to the DSV and then treated like a physical table from the underlying relational database. Again, similar to a SQL view, you create a named query by using a full SELECT statement that returns one or more columns. The SELECT statement can contain any SQL code that is compatible with the underlying database, including a WHERE clause, query hints, JOIN clauses, GROUP BY statements, and so on. To add a named query to your DSV, follow these steps:

Windows XP supports up to ten displays, and you can configure each display with different screen resolution and color depth settings. This is useful in situations when users must have easy access to multiple applications simultaneously. You can view display adapter and monitor properties and driver information through both Device Manager and Display Properties. When you are experiencing problems with display devices, first always make sure that the appropriate drivers are installed. Also, try to set a different screen resolution or color depth to determine whether the problem can be corrected until you locate an appropriate driver. I/O devices extend the capabilities of the basic PC. Standard input devices associ ated with personal computers include the keyboard and mouse, although other devices exist. Standard output devices include monitors and printers. Windows detects and installs most Plug and Play devices automatically. If a device does not support Plug and Play, a user must log on to Windows XP using an account with administrator privileges to complete the installation of the device. Windows XP Professional supports ACPI, which is a specification that controls power consumption in computers. With ACPI, the computer can pass power man agement responsibility to the operating system. ACPI supports power manage ment on desktop and portable computers. However, because portable computers are capable of running on batteries, power management is of greater concern, and more configuration options are available.

Name resolution is performed by two main methods. DNS servers will either contain root hints that enable them to identify and locate authoritative DNS servers for root names or rely on forwarders to link them to another server that will perform the lookup for them. By default, Windows DNS Server relies on root hints to perform lookups. This means that if your users need to perform a lookup on the Internet, your DNS servers will communicate with the name servers. In smaller organizations, this is quite acceptable because even if your DNS servers expose themselves by communicating directly with the Internet, they are the ones who initiate the communication. External systems reply to the initiated communication only and cannot initiate the communication themselves. However, in highly secure networks, you might prefer to rely on forwarders instead of root hints. For example, you might place two standalone DNS servers in your perimeter network and link the internal DNS servers to these servers through forwarders. Each time the internal servers need to resolve an Internet name, they link to one of the servers in the perimeter and ask it to perform the lookup for them. This way, the only servers to communicate outside the network are the more secure standalone servers in the perimeter. Forwarders are configured as part of the properties of the DNS server and are accessed from the Forwarders tab in the DNS server Properties dialog box. (See Figure 9-15.) If you are configuring forwarders for security purposes, make sure you uncheck the Use Root Hints option if no forwarders are available; otherwise, your internal DNS servers will communicate directly with the Internet if your servers in the perimeter do not respond.
