IMAP4 clients can create mail folders on the incoming mail server and move messages between these mail folders. Although there are multiple offerings for the incoming mail server, all outgoing mail servers use Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP). SMTP uses TCP and UDP protocols on port 25. You can use SMTP only to send e-mail, you cannot use it to receive e-mail.

As mentioned in 11, infrastructure issues can also affect network communications in a variety of ways. The first step in determining whether a network communications problem is caused by an infrastructure failure is to see if other computers on the network are experiencing the same problem. For example, a DHCP problem almost always affects other computers because if a DHCP server is configured to provide incorrect TCP/IP settings, all of the computers on the network receive those same settings. The same is true of a DNS problem. If a DNS server fails, all of the computers that rely on it for name resolution suffer the same problem.
