The most publicized and widely known integer over ow error in the last few years hasn t been of cially acknowledged as such On Christmas Day 2004, Comair Airlines had to cancel all 1,100 of its daily ights due to a software problem Comair blamed the shutdown on its crew scheduling system being overloaded due to the large number of crew changes caused by inclement weather earlier in the week Although uncon rmed by Comair, a post on Slashdot the next day theorized that the shutdown was caused by an integer over ow [Slashdot, 2004] An anonymous Comair employee proposed that the shutdown was caused by a hard limit of 32,000 crew changes allowed by Comair s crew scheduling system provided by SBS The limit is suspiciously close to 32,767, the maximum value that can be stored in a signed 16-bit variable, which suggests an integer over ow error as the root cause Several newspapers and online publications picked up this explanation, and it is supported by facts that became available in the subsequently released Department of Transportation (DOT) report [DOT, 2005] The report states that in the two days before the shutdown, Comair processed more than 6,000 changes to the ight crew scheduling and tracking system, which was installed at Comair in 1986 and is leased from SBS International The report goes
