It's certainly worth checking the small print before you begin ;-) Here's a quick example in VB.NET to show how easy PDF generation can be.

To begin developing the application, add a reference to the System.Runtime.Remoting and EmployeeServer assemblies. Also, import the System.Runtime.Remoting and EmployeeServer namespaces at the top of the form class. Now add a new XML file named EmployeeClient.config to the project. This configuration file will store the settings required to configure the remoting infrastructure at the client end. The complete markup of EmployeeClient.config is shown in Listing 11-5. Listing 11-5. Configuring the Remoting Client < xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" > <configuration> <system.runtime.remoting> <application> <client> <wellknown type="EmployeeServer.Employee,EmployeeServer" url="tcp://localhost:8088/MyRemoteObject"></wellknown> </client> </application> </system.runtime.remoting> </configuration> Just like the server configuration file, the root node of the client configuration file is <configuration>, but the <application> section this time contains the <client> subsection. The <client> subsection contains a tag named <wellknown> that specifies details about the remote type. Its attributes are as follows: The tag attribute specifies the fully qualified type name and the assembly. The url attribute specifies the complete URL of the remote server. Because we are using the TCP channel, the URL protocol is tcp. The port at which the server is listening is mentioned just after localhost. Finally, the URI of the remote object (MyRemoteObject in our case) is specified. Now we are ready to consume the remote object. Listing 11-6 shows the relevant code. Listing 11-6. Calling a Method of a Remote Object private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { RemotingConfiguration.Configure(Environment.CurrentDirectory + @"\EmployeeClient.config", false); }

You can see that the PrintCarDetails method doesn t require any parameters. We call such a method using the dot operator to combine the object reference and the method name, but we use empty parentheses (()) because there are no parameters, like this:

Within .NET, the principal object is the centerpiece for authorization. The object must implement System.Security.Principal.IPrincipal, which defines an Identity property and an IsInRole() method. Default implementations are implemented in Csla.Security. BusinessPrincipalBase, and so PTPrincipal inherits from that class: <Serializable()> _ Public Class PTPrincipal Inherits Csla.Security.BusinessPrincipalBase Principal objects typically have a constructor that accepts the identity object that represents the user s identity, and PTPrincipal is no exception: Private Sub New(ByVal identity As IIdentity) MyBase.New(identity) End Sub The BusinessPrincipalBase class also has a constructor that requires an identity object. This object is used to implement the Identity property in that base class, so it doesn t need to be implemented in PTPrincipal. The IsInRole() method is a bit more complex, however. To implement this method, the principal object must have the list of roles to which the user belongs. Of course, the identity object actually represents the user s identity and profile, and so it most likely contains the list of roles for the user as well. Certainly, that is how I choose to implement my custom objects, and so PTIdentity maintains the user s roles. This means that PTPrincipal can simply delegate the call to its identity object: Public Overrides Function IsInRole(ByVal role As String) As Boolean Dim identity As PTIdentity = DirectCast(Me.Identity, PTIdentity) Return identity.IsInRole(role) End Function The result indicates whether the user is in the specified role or not.

The following code is the same as in the previous section, but this time, the methods are labeled virtual and override. This produces a result that is very different from that of the previous example. In this version, calling the method through the base class invokes the method in the derived class. class MyBaseClass { virtual public void Print() { Console.WriteLine("This is the base class."); } } class MyDerivedClass : MyBaseClass { override public void Print() { Console.WriteLine("This is the derived class."); } } class Program { static void Main() { MyDerivedClass derived = new MyDerivedClass(); MyBaseClass mybc = (MyBaseClass)derived; derived.Print(); Cast to base class mybc.Print(); } } This code produces the following output: This is the derived class. This is the derived class. Other important information about the virtual and override modifiers is the following: The overriding and overridden methods must have the same accessibility. In other words, the overridden method cannot be, for example, private, and the overriding method public. You cannot override a method that is static or is non-virtual. Methods, properties, and indexers (which I covered in the preceding chapter), and another member type, called events (which I will cover later in the text), can all be declared virtual and override.
